ATHOL, MA U.S.A. (October 11, 2019) – The L.S. Starrett Company opened its doors in 2019 to welcome over 100 attendees including students, state representatives and the community to its third annual Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 4 at Starrett Corporate Headquarters in Athol, MA. Students attended from Massachusetts schools including Quabbin Regional High School (Barre, MA), Athol High School, Franklin County Technical School (Turners Falls) and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School (Fitchburg).
October is nationally recognized as Manufacturing Month, when thousands of manufacturers across North America participate in Manufacturing Day to educate millions about modern manufacturing and generate interest in the manufacturing trades in order to build a stronger, skilled workforce. Starrett gave guided tours at its headquarters where attendees learned how a Starrett micrometer is manufactured. Visitors were welcomed with a general introduction, and visited the new Starrett Manufacturing Training Center where an overview of making a Starrett No. 230 Outside Micrometer was given, followed by visits to the various departments where the micrometer is made. Also, several attendees enjoyed visiting the onsite Starrett history museum which showcases founder Laroy S. Starrett's original desk, as well as his first invention ‒ a meat chopping machine called The Hasher. Laroy's first Starrett-branded invention, the combination square, is also on display along with many more historical items.
